Bus Stops & Shelters

Bus shelters in city centre

Centro - WMPTA is committed to providing passenger waiting facilities of the highest standard in order to enhance the experience of travelling by bus.

Bus shelters

There are approximately 13, 500 bus stops scattered throughout the West Midlands. Of these, around 5,000 have a passenger shelter – about 1,500 of which are ‘Showcase’ shelters featuring raised kerbs that enable easy-access boarding for wheelchairs and buggies. ‘Showcase’ shelters are being installed along selected routes in partnership with bus companies and local authorities – the latter providing the bus lanes and other bus priority measures that help speed up journey times.

In addition, Centro-WMPTA is currently completing a major programme to upgrade older shelters with our latest attractive ‘Transit’ style of shelter (pictured above) – most of which feature lights and seating. Centro-WMPTA is also trialling the installation of CCTV cameras in our shelters.

Better at-stop information

By the end of 2007, all our shelters will have the new, clearer style of Network West Midlands stop flag and easy-to-understand timetable posters. Busy stops in town centres or at hospitals and major road junctions may also have maps and guides.

Centro-WMPTA has invested heavily in new, computerised facilities that can create a unique poster and flag for each stop. Each poster will also feature a stop code that you can us to receive timetable information via your mobile phone. Click here for more details.

Bus stop poles

By the end of 2007 Centro-WMPTA will have replaced all the bus stops in the West Midlands mounted on poles or lamp columns which currently belong to individual bus companies. These new stops will also feature Network West Midlands flags and timetable posters. We are working with local authorities to provide easy-access raised kerbs at many of them.

Cleaning and maintenance

Centro-WMPTA invests heavily in the cleaning and maintenance of our bus stops and shelters– the cost of which is wholly financed from income we receive from shelter advertising. All shelters are cleaned on a weekly basis. Showcase shelters are visited on a daily basis.

We rely on members of the public to help us too. We will respond on the same day if the incident is considered serious and the site needs to be made safe.
