Centro recently finalised its vision - "Transforming Bus Travel" - to make significant improvements to local bus travel for people in the West Midlands.
Transforming Bus Travel sets a new quality benchmark for services, bus stations, shelters and travel information to help Centro achieve its goal of providing a world class, fully integrated public transport system.
Stourbridge Interchange will be one of the first major building projects to benefit from Transforming Bus Travel.
Although the original bus station would have been modernised, it was decided that we could carry out further improvements to make the bus station even better for passengers.
The new scheme, which will be called Stourbridge Interchange, will be bolder and brighter with features which will bring the bus station to a level that provides the best in bus passenger facilities.
A redesigned interchange entrance will include a landmark canopy focal point.
This will significantly enhance the existing subway environment on the approach to the bus hub.
We have been able to create an impressive facilities building and concourse which will serve the majority of bus stands. Other waiting areas will also be of a high quality, spacious design to improve passenger circulation.
The features in the state-of-the-art facilities building will include toilets, a retail unit (which could provide passenger information and tickets) and electronic passenger information boards which will tell passengers when their bus is due. There will also be CCTV, help points, a public address system and automatic pedestrian access doors that open when the bus arrives.
We also intend to review and improve the walking routes to and from the station and provide CCTV throughout.
The number of pedestrian crossings will be reduced in order to improve access to the bus station. Passengers walking from Stourbridge town centre or Foster Street East will access the bus station through the subway leading directly to the main facilties building which will be more open and bright.
We are also working with Network Rail and London Midland to better integrate the rail and bus station facilities into a single interchange. Passengers will also benefit from a new covered walkway and feature canopy linking the subway to the interchange area.
The new designs were approved by Dudley's Development Control Committee in September.
It is expected that work on the new bus hub will start in 2010 and should be completed by 2011.
