What is TravelWise?
TravelWise is a national travel initiative aimed at getting more people to travel sustainably. This means to walk, cycle, work from home or use public transport rather than driving alone by car. The initiative promotes healthy travel options that help to reduce pollution, congestion and dependency on the car, by helping schools and organisations develop a Travel Plan for their site.
What is a Travel Plan?
A Travel Plan is a sensible approach to travel. It is about looking at the way we travel to work and school and improving the journey experience for everyone. The majority of journeys to work and school are made by car, but sometimes we maybe don’t realise what the alternatives to driving are. A Travel Plan will help you find out about the alternatives to driving and how to access information and services.
For a Travel Plan to be a success it needs to be well publicised within the organisation or school and backed-up with lots of accessible and accurate information. It doesn’t need to be a huge document or require a large budget to implement; the best plans very often start with the simplest ideas:
- Promoting local bus and rail services to your site
- Surveying staff and students to find out their travel habits
- Offering a ‘journey planning’ service – add a link to your Intranet from the Network West Midlands Journey Planner
- Introduce flexible-working hours, home-working or video conferencing working practices
- Improving the safety of walking and cycling routes for staff and students
- Providing secure cycle storage, lockers and shower facilities
- Encouraging car-sharing (two or more people per vehicle)
- Promoting the use of public transport and pool vehicles for business use
- Improving driving standards by providing driver training
- Introducing walking buses, Park and Stride and cycle training schemes in schools
TravelWise at Centro
The Centro TravelWise team and TravelWise Officers within the seven Districts of the West Midlands Metropolitan area work together to help schools and organisations develop travel plans.
