There are lots of ways to help protect the environment, including changing the way you travel.Transport counts for around 25% of the UK's carbon emissions, so next time you're making a journey think whether you really need to use the car.

By taking the bus, train or Metro, walking or cycling, you'll not only reduce your carbon emissions, but you'll save money and improve your health too.

We help local businesses, schools and individuals to travel more sustainably and use public transport to access jobs and services, through the TravelWise and WorkWise initiatives, to ensure the region is a healthier, happier place to live.

What is TravelWise?

TravelWise is a national initiative aimed at encouraging more people to travel sustainably. This means to walk, cycle or use public transport, rather than driving alone by car.

Through this initiative, Centro and our partners work closely with your organisation or school to help you promote sustainable travel internally and to visitors. We can do this by helping you write and implement a travel plan for your site.

What is a Travel Plan?

A Travel Plan is a practical action plan for your organisation or school, which sets out how you will encourage staff, visitors or pupils to travel there more sustainably. This plan doesn"t need to be a huge document or require a large budget. Often it includes simple ideas, such as:

• Promoting local bus and rail services to your site
• Surveying staff and students to find out their travel habits
• Offering a "journey planning" service add a link from your Intranet to the Network West Midlands Journey Planner
• Introduce flexible-working hours, home-working or video conferencing working practices
• Improving the safety of walking and cycling routes for staff and students
• Providing secure cycle storage, lockers and shower facilities
• Encouraging car-sharing (two or more people per vehicle)
• Promoting the use of public transport and pool vehicles for business use
• Improving driving standards by providing driver training
• Introducing walking buses, Park and Stride and cycle training schemes in schools
  

TravelWise at Centro

Centro's Sustainable Travel Team alongside the seven Districts of the West Midlands Metropolitan area work together to help schools and organisations develop travel plans.

We are able to offer discounts on public transport annual passes and site specific advice for schools and businesses.

WorkWise at Centro

WorkWise helps unemployed people access interviews and jobs by overcoming transport barriers to employment. From one-to-one journey planning support for individuals to free travel for interviews and new jobs, WorkWise helps to create sustainable travel users for the future.'
